Profile
The Department of Mathematics was one of the few departments initiated at the time of establishment of the Post Graduate Center at Guntur by the Andhra University in 1967. The Department specializes in the fields of Algebra, Analysis, CONM, Differential Equations, Fuzzy algebra, Graph Theory etc. The Thrust areas of the department include Near Rings, Functional Analysis, and Graph Theory, Numerical Analysis and Universal Algebra.
The Department has produced 15 Ph.D., doctorates. Several products of department established their credentials as good researchers in reputed institutions such as I.I.T. Delhi, Central University, and Hyderabad and so on. The Department has been helping several students and college teachers in their pursuit for higher Mathematics. As many as 45 M.Phils have awarded and good number students are now working for their M.Phil/Ph.D degrees. A good number of research papers by research students and teachers of the department have been published in international and also national journals.
A couple of major research projects sanctioned by the U.G.C. were successfully completed by some of teachers of the department. One more major research project sanctioned by the U.G.C. is in progress under the principal investigatorship of Dr.Bhavanari Satyanaryana.
Several teachers, in recognition of their research output, are being invited by various Mathematical Associations and Universities in and outside India for delivering talks at National and International symposia, Conferences, Seminars and Refresher Courses.
One of our faculties in our department Dr. Bhavani Satyanaryana selected for INSA visiting Fellowship Award (2005-2006). Also Dr. Bhavanari Satyanaryana selected as a Scientist under Indo Hungarian Cultural Exchange Programme (2003) to do joint Research Work with Prof.Richard Wiegandt, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest. He was also selected as Sr. Scientist to visit Budapest. He was also selected as Sr.Scientist to visit Budapest for scientific discussions under Bilateral Exchange Programme (2005) of Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest & INSA, and New Delhi.
The University had under taken MOU with the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (Deemed University), Manipal, and Karnataka for Exchange of ideas and Collaborative Research work between the faculties of the Department of Mathematics of both the Universities. As a result three joint Research papers were published in international Journals (out side India).
The Department enthusiasm does not lag behind any others in promoting activities for developments of Mathematics by way of organizing National/International Seminars. An International seminar on Near Rings in 1984 and a couple of National Seminars in 1989 and 1996, sponsored by U.G.C.were organized by the department. Further the department hosted twice the Annual Conference of the Andhra Pradesh Association of Mathematics and Mathematical sciences. The Department conducted ‘National seminars on Algebra’ during jan 5-6, 2006 under the directonship of Dr.Bhavanari Satyanarya. Prof. Stefen Heldsman from Oman, and Prof. Hans Brungs from canada visied our department to diliver lectures. The department has been recognized by the U.G.C. as a centre for conducting Refresher Courses in Mathematics for University and College teachers and sucessfully conducted 11 Refresher Courses since 1995.
The department has been updating the syllabus periodically keeping in mind the rapid changes taking place in science and Technology. As a part of this, the department recently brought out radical changes in the syllabus by including several new courses suggested in U.G.C. model curriculum.
With the increase in demand for Post Graduate Studies in Mathematics, the department took initative and encourage several colleges to start M.Sc. Mathematics. As a result there are now 30 P.G. Departments in Mathematics in Acharya Nagarjuna Universityarea, including the one in a N.U.P.G. centre, Ongole.
Recognizing the fact that in spite of establishment of several P.G. departments in this university and sister Universities, many enthusiastic students are opting for M.Sc. Mathematics through Distance Education, the department proposed for introdution of M.Sc. Mathematics through Distance education Mode from the academic year 2003-2004 and the CDE of ANU has been offering thecourse from the academic year 2003-2004.
The department has also been helping the young PG teachers of affliated colleges by organizing workshops in the University and also at the affliated colleges in collaboration with the University.
